China’s electric vehicle giant BYD has made history by outselling Tesla in Europe for the first time. According to data from JATO Dynamics, BYD registered 7,231 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Europe in April 2025, slightly surpassing Tesla’s 7,165 units.
This milestone marks a significant shift in the European electric vehicle (EV) market, where Tesla has long dominated.
What Led to BYD’s Rise?
BYD’s rapid growth in Europe can be attributed to its diverse and competitively priced lineup, including the popular Seagull hatchback, which retails at approximately €22,990. This affordability appeals to a broad spectrum of European consumers looking for quality EV options at a reasonable price.
Despite the European Union’s tariffs on Chinese-made EVs, BYD’s registrations surged by 59% year-on-year in April. This contrasts with the overall EV market growth of 26% among European, Japanese, South Korean, and American manufacturers.
Tesla’s Challenges in Europe
Tesla, meanwhile, has faced hurdles, including an aging model lineup and falling demand in key markets. Its European sales dropped by 49% compared to the same period last year. Analysts suggest Tesla’s lack of new model launches and rising competition have impacted its market share.
