Honda to Shift U.S.-Bound 5-Door Civic Hybrid Production to Indiana from Japan

Honda Motor Co. has confirmed plans to move production of its U.S.-bound 5-door Civic hybrid from Japan to its manufacturing plant in Greensburg, Indiana. The transition is expected to take place by June or July 2025, marking a major shift in the company’s North American production strategy.
This move comes amid growing trade tensions and potential tariff threats from the United States. The Biden administration has continued to review automotive trade policy, while former President Trump has proposed a 25% tariff on vehicles imported from countries including Japan, Canada, and Mexico. Honda’s decision is viewed as a proactive measure to avoid future import penalties and align production with market demand.
Indiana Plant to Take Over Civic Hybrid Production
The 5-door Civic hybrid is currently built at Honda's Yorii facility near Tokyo. With the planned shift, production will be transferred to the company’s Indiana Auto Plant in Greensburg, which is already responsible for assembling the Civic sedan and other popular models. Production is scheduled to begin in Indiana in May 2028, with an expected output of around 210,000 units annually.
Honda Moves Toward Localized U.S. Production
The move is part of Honda’s broader strategy to produce 90% of its U.S. vehicle sales domestically. The automaker is also reportedly considering shifting production of the CR-V and HR-V—currently built in Canada and Mexico—to U.S. facilities.
