Amid rising inflation and consumer pressure, the Japanese government has initiated a direct rice sale program aimed at bringing down food costs. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced that 300,000 tons of rice from government stockpiles will be sold directly to large retailers.
In recent months, rice prices in Japan have surged due to poor harvests, supply chain bottlenecks, and global food market volatility. Consumers have voiced growing concern as household staples become increasingly unaffordable.
To counteract this, the government will sell rice at a fixed rate of 11,556 yen per 60 kilograms, offering a significant price break compared to recent market highs. Retailers are expected to pass on these savings to consumers almost immediately.
The initiative is part of broader economic measures to keep daily living costs under control, especially ahead of the summer months when food demand peaks. Analysts expect this to ease pressure on household budgets while stabilizing prices in the rice market.
Authorities plan to monitor retail pricing trends over the next two months. If successful, similar programs could be expanded to include other food essentials such as wheat and cooking oil.
This move underscores Japan’s proactive approach to food security, price control, and consumer welfare during challenging economic conditions.
