This decisive action aims to prevent the facility's imminent closure, protect 2,700 jobs, and preserve the UK's only remaining site capable of producing virgin steel—an essential component for defense and infrastructure projects.
The move follows the refusal of British Steel's Chinese owner, Jingye Group, to continue funding the plant's operations, citing significant financial losses. The government's swift response involved recalling Parliament during the Easter recess to pass the Steel Industry (Special Measures) Act 2025, empowering the Secretary of State for Business and Trade to direct the company's operations in the public interest.
