Aamir Khan's never-before-seen audition for Kiran Rao’s critically acclaimed film Laapataa Ladies has been released online and is grabbing attention for all the right reasons. Posted on his newly launched YouTube channel Aamir Khan Talkies on March 26, the video shows Aamir attempting the role of SI Shyam Manohar, the small-town cop eventually played by Ravi Kishan.
In the tape, Aamir appears in full police uniform with his hair slicked back, chewing paan, and delivering lines in a rustic dialect. The actor is seen bringing his own interpretation to the role, experimenting with voice modulation and body language. However, fans on social media were quick to point out that the character belonged more naturally to Ravi Kishan.
One viral comment summed up the sentiment: “Aamir Khan is good, but Ravi Kishan ke samne pani kam chai!” Another user wrote, “Casting Ravi Kishan was the best decision. Aamir's effort was sincere, but Ravi lived the role.”
The audition includes several takes, including bloopers and improvisations. Aamir, known as Mr. Perfectionist, gave the role a serious try. He added subtle quirks like paan-chewing and leaning back in a relaxed cop posture while speaking to an unseen character. The video received praise for Aamir’s humility in sharing his own “rejected” tape and embracing Ravi’s success.
Kiran Rao, director of the film and Aamir’s ex-wife, had previously shared that Aamir was interested in playing the cop but she ultimately cast Ravi Kishan. Now, fans are praising her casting instincts. “Full marks to Kiran for choosing Ravi Kishan. It changed the film,” one fan posted.
Laapataa Ladies, which released in December 2023, tells the story of two young brides mistakenly swapped during a train journey in rural India in the 1990s. The film starred newcomers Sparsh Srivastava, Nitanshi Goel, and Pratibha Ranta, and won wide critical acclaim. At the 2025 IIFA Awards, the film took home 10 awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Ravi Kishan.
While Aamir Khan’s audition showcased his dedication and versatility, fans believe the right choice was made. The internet’s overwhelming support for Ravi Kishan reinforces his performance’s impact, proving once again that authenticity often wins over stardom.
