As ChatGPT’s Studio Ghibli image generation trend continues to gain momentum online, music composer and singer Vishal Dadlani has publicly criticized the viral phenomenon. While celebrities like Kiara Advani and Amitabh Bachchan have embraced the trend, Dadlani took a strong stance against it, citing ethical and environmental concerns.
Taking to his Instagram stories on April 2, 2025, the composer urged followers to refrain from tagging him in any AI-generated Studio Ghibli-style avatars featuring his likeness.
“Sorry I'm not sharing any of the Studio Ghibli style images you guys have made of or for me. I just can't bring myself to support AI's plagiarisation of an artist's life's work,” Dadlani wrote. His comments came in response to the growing number of fan-made AI artworks being shared across social platforms.
He further emphasized the environmental cost of AI tools, adding, “Not to mention, the environmental horror that those images are. Please do NOT make any more. Thank you.”
While Vishal voiced strong objections, other celebrities have embraced the AI trend. Amitabh Bachchan recently posted his own Ghibli-style edits on his blog, writing: “And Ghibli... invades the world... in the reality of the realm of communication .. and the making of the 'reel’ .. another now popular concept .. one which demands attention.”
Meanwhile, the trend, powered by ChatGPT’s image generation tool, continues to flood social feeds with Ghibli-inspired avatars. It allows users to transform any photo into the signature style of Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli and creator of timeless classics like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro.
The viral trend has reignited ethical concerns about AI's use of copyrighted material in training datasets. Critics argue that such AI-generated works, though entertaining, potentially undermine human creativity and artistic livelihoods.
Interestingly, Miyazaki himself has long been critical of AI in art. A past video of him calling AI-generated animation “an insult to life” resurfaced recently, fueling the debate further.
