In the wake of rising military tension between India and Pakistan, 90 flights were cancelled at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on May 8, 2025. The cancellations followed India's Operation Sindoor, a high-intensity strike targeting terrorist hideouts across the border, prompting Pakistan to tighten its airspace regulations and raise regional alert levels.
Flight Operations Hit Hard
According to Hindustan Times, the cancellations include:
- 46 domestic departures
- 33 domestic arrivals
- 5 international departures
- 6 international arrivals
Major Indian carriers like IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet have been forced to adjust their schedules. Several international airlines, including Lufthansa and British Airways, have also rerouted flights to avoid Pakistani airspace, leading to longer travel times and higher operational costs.
Official Advisory Issued
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) released a statement assuring that airport operations are “normal across all terminals and runways” but acknowledged that some flights were affected due to the dynamic airspace situation. They urged passengers to stay in touch with their airlines for real-time updates.
The advisory read: “Changing airspace conditions have impacted some flight movements. Passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for the latest flight information.”

Military Tensions Behind the Disruption
The flight chaos stems from India’s military action under Operation Sindoor, launched in retaliation for the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that killed 28 Hindu pilgrims. India claims to have neutralized over 100 militants, prompting Pakistan to respond with its own air and missile deployments. Although no official airspace closure has been announced by Indian authorities, heightened security and precautionary measures have disrupted civilian air traffic.
As reported by Business Standard, authorities are monitoring the situation closely. Passengers planning to travel via Delhi in the coming days are advised to remain alert to further changes.
Looking Ahead
With India–Pakistan relations entering a volatile phase, and the possibility of more retaliatory action looming, the aviation sector may continue facing turbulence in the days ahead. Travelers are urged to plan ahead and check flight schedules frequently.
As always, safety remains the top priority, and airlines are coordinating with government agencies to ensure the least disruption possible while maintaining strict security protocols.
