On the night of May 31, 2025, two separate bridge collapses struck Russia's western Bryansk and Kursk regions, both bordering Ukraine. The disasters have resulted in at least seven fatalities and multiple injuries, raising serious concerns about the safety and security of critical infrastructure in this volatile border area.
Bridge Collapse in Bryansk Region Causes Train Derailment and Multiple Deaths
Just before midnight, a major road bridge in Bryansk unexpectedly gave way as a Moscow-bound passenger train carrying 388 passengers was passing underneath. The bridge fell onto the railway tracks, causing three train carriages to derail violently. Emergency responders confirmed that seven people lost their lives, while more than 70 passengers were injured, including children.
Second Collapse in Kursk Region Disrupts Freight Transport and Injures Crew
Approximately four hours later, in the neighboring Kursk region, a railway bridge also collapsed while a freight train was crossing. The accident caused the train to derail, injuring three crew members and disrupting rail traffic significantly.
Governor Roman Starovoit confirmed suspicions that an explosion caused the collapse and revealed that a joint investigative effort is ongoing to understand if the two collapses are connected.
