Beijing has firmly denied President Donald Trump’s recent claims that the United States and China are engaged in ongoing tariff negotiations. The Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a sharp rebuke on April 25, stating that no discussions on trade tariffs are currently taking place between the two nations.
China’s Official Response
Speaking at a press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that “there are no consultations or communications underway regarding tariff issues.” He added that recent U.S. remarks were “misleading the public and do not reflect the current state of China-U.S. relations.”
The Commerce Ministry echoed the same sentiment, noting that any future trade dialogue must be founded on “mutual respect and equality,” suggesting that Beijing is unwilling to enter talks under current conditions.
Trump’s Controversial Remarks
Earlier this week, President Trump claimed that Chinese President Xi Jinping had reached out to resume tariff discussions and that a new trade deal was “very close.” These remarks, made during a campaign rally and reiterated in a televised interview, caused confusion among analysts and spurred reactions in global markets.
