Donald Trump Proposes 100% Tariff on Foreign Films, Plans to Reopen Alcatraz Prison

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday a sweeping new policy that would impose a 100% tariff on all movies produced outside the United States, citing concerns about the decline of the American film industry and foreign influence on domestic media.
Trump's Bold Move: Protecting American Film Industry
Posting on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump accused foreign governments of undermining Hollywood by offering incentives to lure American filmmakers abroad. Calling it a “national security threat,” Trump said that foreign-produced films act as vehicles for propaganda and are drawing vital creative talent out of the U.S.
“The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death,” he wrote. “Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda!”
He continued, “Therefore, I am authorizing the Department of Commerce and the United States Trade Representative to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% tariff on any and all movies coming into our country that are produced in foreign lands. WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!”
Nationalism or Censorship?
Critics argue the measure could backfire, limiting cultural exchange and inflating entertainment prices for American consumers. However, supporters say the move may rejuvenate the domestic film economy and strengthen cultural identity.
Alcatraz Reopening: A Return to "Tough on Crime"
In a separate post, Trump also revealed his directive to reopen and rebuild the infamous Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay, previously closed in 1963.

“When we were a more serious Nation, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals and keep them far away from anyone they could harm,” Trump stated. “REBUILD, AND OPEN ALCATRAZ!”
According to his statement, the Bureau of Prisons, along with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, has been instructed to collaborate on transforming Alcatraz into a modern high-security facility to house “America’s most ruthless and violent offenders.”
Historic Site, New Purpose
Once home to criminals like Al Capone, Alcatraz is now a popular tourist destination. Trump’s proposal would substantially change its role, converting a symbol of the past into a centerpiece of his modern law-and-order agenda.
What Comes Next?
Both announcements signal a sharp pivot toward economic protectionism and aggressive criminal justice reform. Whether these plans gain legal traction or become key talking points in the 2026 campaign remains to be seen. As the political landscape heats up, Trump continues to blend entertainment, nationalism, and hardline policy into his unique brand of leadership.
