GE to Deliver First of 99 F404 Engines for Tejas Mk 1A by March-End
General Electric (GE) is on track to deliver the first F404-IN20 engine out of a batch of 99 to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) by the end of March 2025. This milestone marks a significant step in the modernization of the Indian Air Force (IAF) as it prepares to induct the much-awaited Tejas Mk 1A Light Combat Aircraft (LCA).
Why the F404-IN20 Engine Matters
The F404-IN20 engine, developed by GE Aerospace, is a proven powerplant designed for agility, reliability, and performance in combat scenarios. These engines are purpose-built to power the upgraded version of India's indigenous Tejas fighter jets, known as the Mk 1A variant.
- Provides 84 kN of thrust with afterburner
- Lightweight and compact, ideal for single-engine fighters
- Used in multiple aircraft platforms globally
Background: The Contract and Delays
The contract for 99 engines was signed between GE and HAL in August 2021, with deliveries originally scheduled to begin in March 2023. However, global supply chain issues and component shortages caused delays.
Despite the initial setbacks, GE has now streamlined its production pipeline and confirmed that 12 engines will be delivered in 2025, followed by a consistent delivery of 20 engines annually until the order is fulfilled.

HAL’s Push for Faster Aircraft Production
To keep up with the IAF’s demand, HAL is enhancing its manufacturing capabilities. In addition to the existing assembly lines in Bengaluru, a third production line has been established in Nashik. This move is expected to increase annual production capacity from 16 to 24 aircraft.
- First Tejas Mk 1A from Nashik expected by April 2025
- Fourth assembly line under planning to meet future orders
- IAF set to receive 16-24 aircraft per year from FY2025
Strategic Significance for Indian Air Force
The timely delivery of the F404 engines is critical for India’s defense preparedness, especially as the IAF looks to modernize its fleet amidst regional security concerns. The Tejas Mk 1A, equipped with modern avionics, electronic warfare systems, and now supported by GE’s advanced propulsion, will enhance India's air combat capabilities.
By synchronizing engine deliveries with aircraft production, India ensures faster deployment of indigenous fighter jets, reducing its dependency on foreign aircraft platforms.
