India and Pakistan Agree to Ceasefire After Days of Cross-Border Strikes

In a significant development for South Asian stability, India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire after a volatile four-day military standoff that began with a deadly militant attack in Kashmir. The ceasefire comes following an intensive exchange of air and drone strikes between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
The situation escalated rapidly after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which targeted Indian civilians and military personnel. In retaliation, the Indian Air Force conducted precision strikes on eight Pakistani military sites, including radar installations and ammunition depots. Pakistan responded with drone and missile attacks on Indian military bases and civilian infrastructure, prompting fears of an all-out conflict.
Diplomatic Mediation Leads to De-escalation
According to a report by Reuters, the ceasefire agreement was reached through emergency back-channel diplomacy facilitated by the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. The mediators urged both countries to step back from further escalation to avoid a broader regional crisis.
Indus Waters Treaty Still Suspended
While military action has ceased for now, diplomatic tensions remain high. One major unresolved issue is the continued suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, a longstanding agreement that governs water sharing between the two countries. Indian officials have expressed concerns over potential water weaponization by Pakistan, while Islamabad accuses India of using water access as leverage.
Regional Stability at Stake
Security experts believe the situation remains fragile. "This ceasefire is a temporary diplomatic success, but a long-term resolution requires sustained dialogue and trust-building measures," said a senior official from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

Military forces on both sides remain on alert, and the Line of Control (LoC) continues to be heavily fortified. Cross-border drone activity, although reduced, has not stopped entirely as of Saturday evening.
Global Response and Cautious Optimism
The ceasefire has been welcomed by the global community. The United Nations and European Union issued statements supporting the diplomatic breakthrough and urging both nations to pursue a peaceful path forward.
While the guns may have fallen silent for now, analysts agree that this episode is a stark reminder of how quickly tensions between India and Pakistan can spiral—and how urgently regional peace mechanisms are needed.
