In the aftermath of the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, on April 22, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, including 25 Indian tourists and one Nepalese national, the Indian government has taken stringent measures against Pakistan. The attack, claimed by the Resistance Front (TRF), a group linked to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has been labeled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "heinous act" warranting a robust response.
Visa Revocations and Expulsions
India has suspended all visas issued to Pakistani nationals, effective immediately. Those currently in India are required to leave by April 27, 2025. Medical visas will remain valid until April 29, 2025. Additionally, the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme has been revoked for Pakistani citizens, who now have 48 hours to depart the country. The Indian government has also expelled Pakistani military attachés and reduced the staff strength of the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi. Conversely, India will withdraw its defense advisers from Islamabad and decrease its diplomatic presence there.
Suspension of Indus Waters Treaty and Border Closure
Further escalating the situation, India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a critical water-sharing agreement established in 1960. The Attari-Wagah land border crossing has also been closed, effectively severing one of the primary points of land-based interaction between the two nations.

Pakistan's Retaliatory Measures
In response, Pakistan has denied any involvement in the Pahalgam attack and has initiated reciprocal actions. All visas issued to Indian nationals under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme have been canceled, excluding those for Sikh religious pilgrims. Indian nationals currently in Pakistan under this scheme have been instructed to leave within 48 hours. Pakistan has also expelled Indian Defense, Naval, and Air Advisors from Islamabad, requiring their departure by April 30, 2025. Moreover, Pakistan has suspended all trade with India and closed its airspace to Indian-owned or operated airlines.
International Concerns and Regional Stability
The rapid escalation of diplomatic tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors has raised alarms internationally. The United States, United Kingdom, and China have expressed concerns over the potential for further conflict and have urged both nations to exercise restraint. The situation remains fluid, with both countries standing firm on their respective positions.
