Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has announced that the Israeli military will intensify operations in Gaza and seize "large areas" of the territory, which he described as part of newly expanded "security zones."

The statement, issued on Wednesday, outlined that the goal of the operation is to "destroy and clear the area of terrorists and terrorist infrastructure." This escalation will involve a large-scale evacuation of Palestinian civilians from their homes.

At Least 15 Palestinians Killed Overnight

Local hospitals reported that at least 15 Palestinians were killed overnight in intensified Israeli strikes. The Hamas-run civil defence agency said that first responders had recovered 12 bodies, including children, from the rubble of a house in Khan Younis.

Reports also indicated heavy Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling near the Egypt border, fueling fears of a new large-scale ground offensive.

Evacuation Orders and Buffer Zone Expansion

This week, the Israeli military issued evacuation orders to around 140,000 residents of Rafah and parts of northern Gaza. The planned buffer zone now stretches along the Israel-Gaza border and the Egypt-Gaza border, cutting through the narrow Netzarim Corridor south of Gaza City.

Israel has already expanded its control of key land corridors in Gaza since the war began and appears to be pushing toward a more permanent territorial presence in parts of the region.

Hostage Families React with Anguish

In response to the escalation, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum in Israel expressed horror at the news. In a statement, the group urged the Israeli government to prioritize the release of the 59 hostages still believed to be held in Gaza. They emphasized diplomacy and hostage return over military expansion.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate rapidly. Since March 2, Israel has blocked all aid into the Gaza Strip, marking the longest period of aid suspension since the war started. On top of widespread shortages, the UN has scaled back operations after losing multiple staff and medical workers to Israeli strikes in recent weeks.

According to the Hamas-run health ministry, the ongoing conflict has resulted in over 50,399 deaths in Gaza since October 7, 2023. The Israeli offensive was launched in retaliation for a deadly Hamas attack that killed approximately 1,200 people and saw 251 hostages taken into Gaza.

Katz Urges Palestinians to Reject Hamas

In his announcement, Defence Minister Katz called on Gaza’s population to act against Hamas and aid in the release of hostages, though no specific strategy or civilian protection measures were mentioned.

The international community has expressed growing alarm over Israel's evolving strategy and its implications for civilians caught in the crossfire, as the conflict shows no signs of de-escalation.
