Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has described his forthcoming meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the June G7 summit in Canada as a "milestone" in efforts to resolve the ongoing tariff disputes between the two nations.
Phone Conversation Sets the Stage
On May 23, Ishiba and Trump engaged in a 45-minute phone call focusing on trade tariffs, diplomatic relations, and regional security. Ishiba reiterated Japan's stance favoring investment over tariffs, urging the U.S. to reconsider the 25% tariff on automobile imports, which significantly impacts Japan's economy. Trump did not provide a definitive response during the call.
Economic Implications for Japan
The imposed tariffs have placed considerable strain on Japan's economy, particularly affecting the automotive sector. Major corporations like Toyota, Nissan, and Sony have reported potential annual losses amounting to ¥4 trillion (approximately $28 billion). The tariffs have also led to a 0.7% contraction in Japan's GDP in the first quarter of 2025.

Upcoming Negotiations
Japan's chief trade negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, is scheduled to visit Washington on May 30 for a fourth round of trade discussions. The agenda includes meetings with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other officials to address the contentious tariffs. Japan is considering concessions in areas such as shipbuilding cooperation and easing import vehicle certification to reach a mutually beneficial agreement.
Looking Ahead
As the June G7 summit approaches, both nations aim to find common ground to resolve the tariff issues. Ishiba's emphasis on investment and mutual cooperation underscores Japan's commitment to strengthening economic ties with the U.S. while safeguarding its domestic industries.
