Murshidabad, West Bengal — April 13, 2025: Violent protests erupted in Murshidabad district of West Bengal over the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Act, resulting in three fatalities, injuries to several people, and over 150 arrests. The situation remains tense as security forces have been deployed and internet services remain suspended to control the unrest.
Why Did the Protests Start?
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 has triggered widespread anger in parts of West Bengal, especially in Murshidabad. The protesters allege that the new amendments grant excessive powers to the government to control and manage religious properties, weakening the autonomy of local Waqf Boards.
Violent Clashes in Murshidabad
What began as peaceful demonstrations quickly turned violent in key areas such as Dhuliyan, Samserganj, and Suti. The protesters set a police jeep on fire, vandalized private vehicles, and attacked the office of a local Member of Parliament. Train services were disrupted due to stone-pelting incidents at railway stations.
Government Action to Control the Situation
The state government has suspended internet services across Murshidabad district to prevent the spread of rumors and mobilization of mobs through social media. Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) along with Border Security Force (BSF) units have been deployed to restore law and order.
