In a bold military operation on May 7, 2025, India launched Operation Sindoor, executing 24 high-precision missile strikes on nine identified terror camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The Indian Ministry of Defence confirmed that the operation resulted in the deaths of over 70 terrorists and injured more than 60 others.
This operation was India’s direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives, including one Nepali tourist. Investigations linked the attack to The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy group backed by Lashkar-e-Taiba and operating with support from within Pakistan.
Details of the Precision Strike
- Targets: Nine active terrorist infrastructure sites, including Muridke, Bahawalpur, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad.
- Strike Count: 24 coordinated missile launches executed by the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy.
- Casualties: Over 70 terrorists killed, more than 60 severely injured.
- Operation Nature: Non-escalatory, focused solely on dismantling terror facilities, avoiding civilian and military targets.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the intelligence-backed targeting. "These camps were used as launchpads for cross-border terrorism. Our operation sends a clear message—India will not tolerate state-backed terror," he said during a media briefing.
Pakistan’s Response and Escalating Tensions
The Pakistani government condemned the strikes, labeling them an “act of war” and claimed civilian casualties, including women and children. Pakistan's military also alleged that several Indian fighter jets were shot down—an assertion not independently verified nor acknowledged by India.
Following the strikes, Pakistan initiated artillery fire across the Line of Control (LoC), resulting in additional military skirmishes and injuries on both sides.

Global reactions poured in quickly. The United Nations, along with leaders from the United States, United Kingdom, and China, urged both nuclear-armed neighbors to de-escalate the situation. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for “immediate diplomatic dialogue.”
India emphasized that the mission was "measured, precise, and in line with international norms of self-defense." Meanwhile, heightened alert has been issued across northern Indian states, with schools shut in border regions and the armed forces on full operational readiness.
Strategic and Political Implications
Operation Sindoor marks a historic moment—the first coordinated use of India’s tri-services (Army, Navy, Air Force) for a targeted strike on foreign soil since the 1971 war. The operation is expected to have long-lasting impacts on regional geopolitics and India’s counter-terror strategy moving forward.
