On May 2, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Positioned to become a cornerstone in India's maritime and trade infrastructure, the port is a long-anticipated development aimed at boosting India's share in global shipping and logistics.
Developed and operated by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd., the seaport marks a major milestone in India’s ambition to become a global logistics hub. The project aligns with PM Modi’s “Make in India” vision by enhancing export capabilities and reducing dependency on foreign transshipment hubs.
India’s First Deepwater Transshipment Port
The Vizhinjam port is strategically located on the southern tip of India and boasts natural advantages that make it ideal for international cargo traffic. Designed with cutting-edge infrastructure and international expertise, the port can accommodate ultra-large container vessels and aims to directly compete with global ports like Colombo, Singapore, and Dubai.
- Constructed at an estimated cost of over ₹7,500 crore
- Expected capacity: Over 1 million TEUs annually
- Natural draft depth exceeding 20 meters—ideal for mega vessels
- Operated by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd., with global logistics integration
- Thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities created
Strategic Importance to India's Maritime Network
Vizhinjam’s location just 10 nautical miles from the international east-west shipping route places it in a prime position to become a preferred transshipment hub. It drastically shortens delivery timelines, enhances cargo connectivity, and reduces port-related costs for Indian exporters and importers.

Looking Ahead
The Vizhinjam Seaport is expected to be fully operational by late 2025. Once complete, it will not only strengthen India’s maritime trade network but also drive regional development in southern India. As one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the country, it sets a new benchmark in public-private port development.
With Adani Ports at the helm and the central government’s full backing, Vizhinjam is poised to transform India's position in global commerce, becoming a new symbol of efficiency, innovation, and strategic foresight.
