RBI's Projected ₹1 Lakh Crore Liquidity Infusion by March 2025
Current Liquidity Scenario
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is anticipated to inject an additional ₹1 lakh crore into the banking system by March 2025 to maintain liquidity equilibrium, according to a report by the State Bank of India (SBI). As of late February, the banking system's liquidity deficit stood at approximately ₹1.6 lakh crore, with an average deficit around ₹1.95 lakh crore.
Factors Contributing to Liquidity Tightness
- Significant foreign portfolio investor (FPI) outflows.
- Maturing forward transactions in the upcoming months.
- Year-end tax outflows.
- Rising credit demand.
RBI's Measures to Address Liquidity
- Conducting variable rate repo (VRR) auctions of different tenors.
- Engaging in open market operations (OMOs).
- Implementing dollar-rupee swap arrangements.
- Reducing the repo rate by 25 basis points in February 2025 to support liquidity.
Analysts' Perspectives
Market analysts indicate that despite the RBI's efforts, the liquidity deficit persists. The banking system's liquidity deficit was around ₹1.7 lakh crore as of February 20, 2025. Economist Gaura Sen Gupta from IDFC First Bank estimates that a ₹1.2 lakh crore infusion is needed to eliminate the liquidity shortfall.
