Sunita Williams Praises India's Stunning Beauty From Space: 'Himalayas Shine Like a Beacon'

NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who recently returned from a remarkable 286-day mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), gave a heartwarming response when asked how India looks from space. Her answer brought a wave of pride and nostalgia to Indians around the world.

“India is amazing, just amazing,” she says with pride

During a press conference at Johnson Space Center in Houston on April 1, 2025, Williams vividly described her experience of orbiting over India. She emphasized the majestic view of the Himalayas, which she compared to a ripple that flows down into the Indian subcontinent.

“Every time we went over the Himalayas, we got incredible pictures,” said Williams. “It happened like a ripple and flows down into India. The colors, the terrain, the cities – all blend into a beautiful patchwork that's truly mesmerizing.”

Network of Lights and the Indian Coastline

Williams further elaborated on the glowing networks of cities visible at night. “From the East heading into Gujarat and Mumbai, the fishing fleets off the coast act like beacons. The lights across cities big and small form a vibrant web — it’s truly a sight to behold.”

Plans to Collaborate with ISRO

When asked whether she plans to visit India or assist the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Williams responded enthusiastically. “I hope we can meet at some point and share our experiences with many people in India. It’s a wonderful democracy with big dreams in space, and I’d love to support that.”

Her colleague, Butch Wilmore, added some humor by asking if she planned to take her crew members along, to which she smilingly replied, “Absolutely.”

Returning to Earth After a Historic Space Journey

Sunita Williams, alongside NASA’s Nick Hague, Butch Wilmore, and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, made a successful return to Earth on March 18, 2025. They splashed down in the SpaceX Dragon capsule at 5:57 PM EDT after nearly nine months in orbit.

Since then, the crew has been undergoing physical therapy at the Johnson Space Center to reacclimate to Earth’s gravity. Williams even mentioned that she managed a 3-mile run on Sunday, signaling a healthy and strong recovery.

A Legacy That Inspires

Much like Rakesh Sharma’s iconic "Saare Jahaan Se Accha" moment in 1984, Williams' words have added a new chapter to India’s space legacy. Her connection to her Indian heritage and admiration for the country’s beauty continue to inspire countless young minds to look up and dream big.
