In a stark reminder of the ongoing volatility in the region, Ukraine has reported a surge of Russian drone and missile attacks shortly after a 30-hour Easter ceasefire declared by Russia ended. The renewed assault, confirmed by Ukrainian and international sources, took place on April 21, 2025, marking a swift return to hostilities.
Air Raid Alerts Across Ukraine
According to Reuters, air raid sirens were activated in at least six regions including Kyiv, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Cherkasy, Mykolaiv, and Zaporizhzhia. The alerts followed a series of drone attacks, which Ukrainian officials claim directly violate the terms of the declared ceasefire.
Zelenskyy: “Ceasefire Was a Lie”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Moscow of using the ceasefire as a political smokescreen. In a public address, he stated that Russian forces committed over 3,000 violations during the truce, including 59 confirmed shelling incidents and five ground assaults.
“Russia has again shown that it cannot be trusted to honor its own ceasefire declarations. The ceasefire was a lie, a manipulation,” Zelenskyy said.

Mutual Accusations of Violations
While Ukraine reports ongoing Russian offensives, the Russian government has responded with its own accusations. According to Al Jazeera, Russian officials claim over 1,000 Ukrainian drone and artillery attacks occurred during the truce period, suggesting both sides were preparing for renewed escalation.
Ukraine Pushes for Longer Truce
In light of the situation, Ukrainian officials proposed a 30-day extension to the Easter ceasefire, aiming to reduce civilian casualties and enable humanitarian access in war-torn areas. The Kremlin has so far rejected this proposal, opting instead to intensify operations in contested eastern regions like Donetsk and Luhansk.
Humanitarian Impact Rising
Local Ukrainian authorities reported several civilian injuries and property damage following the drone strikes. Infrastructure in Kherson and Dnipropetrovsk suffered damage to power lines and water systems, exacerbating living conditions in the already strained areas.
The United Nations has called for restraint, urging both sides to prioritize humanitarian needs over military goals. Meanwhile, the international community watches closely as peace talks continue to stall and battlefield activity ramps up once again.
