Universal Studios has officially announced plans to build its first-ever theme park in Europe, and it’s coming to Bedfordshire, United Kingdom. This massive entertainment destination will feature a Harry Potter-themed rollercoaster, a 500-room hotel, a retail district, and more — all part of a project that’s expected to become Europe’s largest theme park by the time it opens in 2031.
Backed by the UK government, the resort will span nearly 476 acres of land at a former brickworks site just north of London. With convenient rail links to the capital and proximity to Luton Airport, the site was strategically chosen to draw millions of domestic and international tourists alike.
What to Expect from Universal UK
- 🏰 Harry Potter-themed attractions, including a major rollercoaster ride
- 🛌 A 500-room on-site resort hotel
- 🎡 Multiple rides and immersive entertainment zones
- 🛍️ Dining, shopping, and nightlife in a dedicated entertainment district
- 🚉 Strong transport links via train and Luton Airport
The new resort is expected to create over 28,000 jobs, including 20,000 during the construction phase and 8,000 permanent roles once the park is operational. Universal also projects it will bring in around 8.5 million annual visitors and contribute up to £50 billion to the UK economy by 2055.
A Strategic Move in the Theme Park Race
With fierce competition from Disneyland Paris and other European attractions, this marks a bold expansion by Universal into untapped territory. The company has cited strong tourism numbers in the UK and the popularity of brands like Harry Potter, Jurassic World, and Minions as key reasons for choosing Bedfordshire.

“This is more than just a theme park,” said a Universal representative. “It’s a world-class entertainment destination that will redefine leisure and tourism in Europe.”
What’s Next?
While the government has given its support, the project still needs formal planning approval. If all goes according to schedule, construction will begin in 2026, with phased openings starting in the early 2030s.
With this landmark project, Universal Studios aims not just to compete with Disney in Europe — but to become the continent’s most iconic entertainment hub.
