In their fourth match of the season, Mumbai Indians (MI) finally opened their account in IPL 2025 with a convincing 8-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, March 31. The game saw an explosive debut by young pacer Ashwani Kumar and a composed knock by Ryan Rickelton.
Making his IPL debut, 23-year-old left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar stunned KKR’s batting lineup with a fiery opening spell. He picked up 4 wickets for just 24 runs, dismissing Ajinkya Rahane with his very first ball and setting the tone for a dominant performance by MI’s bowling unit.
KKR’s batters struggled to find momentum throughout the innings and were eventually bowled out for 116 in 16.2 overs.
Chasing a modest total, MI's top order made quick work of the target. South African batter Ryan Rickelton anchored the innings with an unbeaten 62 off 41 balls, including some stylish strokeplay and steady partnerships.
Mumbai Indians reached the target in just 12.5 overs, finishing at 121/2 and sealing their first win of the season with authority.
This win lifts Mumbai Indians off the bottom of the IPL 2025 table and gives them much-needed momentum going into the next fixtures. For Kolkata Knight Riders, this marks a significant setback after a promising start, and they will need to reassess their approach moving forward.
Mumbai Indians will look to build on this victory and gain consistency, while KKR must fix their batting woes before their next clash. With Ashwani Kumar making a strong case for a permanent spot, MI’s bowling attack appears more formidable than ever.
