In a major shift in its global manufacturing strategy, Apple Inc. has reportedly set plans to assemble all iPhones sold in the United States in India by the end of 2026. The move highlights Apple’s intensifying efforts to reduce its longstanding reliance on Chinese manufacturing, especially amid growing geopolitical tensions and tariff challenges between Washington and Beijing.
Apple’s strategic pivot comes in the wake of increasing U.S.-China trade friction, with tariffs and regulatory hurdles placing mounting pressure on American tech firms operating in or sourcing from China. The risks were further amplified after U.S. lawmakers pushed for broader tech sector decoupling from China due to national security concerns.
As a result, Apple’s decision is seen as both a geopolitical hedge and a way to fortify its supply chain resiliency. According to a Financial Times report, the company will move the final assembly of iPhones intended for U.S. consumers exclusively to India, where it already manufactures roughly 20% of its global iPhone output.
Apple has been gradually expanding its operations in India since 2017, and the growth has sharply accelerated over the past two years. Contract manufacturers such as Foxconn, Tata Electronics, and Wistron have received major investments to scale up production capacity within India.
Foxconn, Apple’s primary assembly partner, is reportedly planning to double iPhone production in India by the end of 2025 to support the U.S. market transition. Tata Group also recently took over operations at a major Apple supplier plant and is expected to play a key role in this geographic pivot.
Despite the rapid shift in final assembly, analysts caution that Apple still depends heavily on Chinese suppliers for components like display panels, chips, and batteries. A complete relocation of Apple’s supply chain remains a long-term challenge and will require significant investment and strategic partnerships.
Nonetheless, the move to shift iPhone assembly for the U.S. market to India is being hailed as a significant milestone in Apple’s diversification journey. It also positions India as a rising electronics manufacturing hub capable of handling high-volume, high-tech consumer electronics.
As the company prepares for its next generation of devices, including upcoming AI-focused iPhones and wearables, its production base in India is expected to play a pivotal role in both global supply and regional market growth.
Apple has not officially commented on the full scope of the transition, but insiders suggest the company is aiming to complete the shift within the next 18–24 months.
