In April 2025, UK retail powerhouse Marks & Spencer (M&S) suffered a major cyberattack that disrupted operations and compromised customer data. The breach, attributed to the notorious hacking group Scattered Spider, caused widespread suspension of online orders and significant financial losses estimated at £300 million in operating profit.
Tata Consultancy Services, a longstanding IT services provider to M&S for over a decade, is currently under scrutiny following the attack. TCS has launched an internal investigation to determine whether its systems served as the entry point for the hackers. The probe is expected to conclude by the end of May 2025.

The hacking group Scattered Spider is known for sophisticated social engineering tactics, including impersonating IT staff to gain unauthorized system access. This method appears to have been used to infiltrate M&S’s IT infrastructure, causing operational paralysis and data breaches.
The cyberattack has had a profound impact on M&S, halting online sales for several weeks and shaking consumer confidence. The estimated £300 million loss in operating profit reflects the scale of disruption. Both M&S and TCS have yet to publicly disclose detailed findings from ongoing investigations.
