In a surprising yet timely move, Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey has launched Bitchat—a revolutionary new chat app that works without an internet connection, SIM card, or even a phone number. The app, announced on July 6, 2025, is currently in beta and has already sparked global interest among privacy advocates, technologists, and users in high-surveillance or low-connectivity regions.
Bitchat is built on a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh network that allows users to send messages without relying on cellular networks or Wi-Fi. Instead, messages hop across nearby devices using peer-to-peer Bluetooth connections, creating a self-healing, decentralized communication network.
Messages are relayed from phone to phone within a ~100–300 meter range per hop, with each user’s device acting as a temporary message node. Once delivered, messages are automatically deleted from intermediate devices, ensuring privacy and minimal data footprint.
Bitchat uses strong encryption protocols, such as Curve25519 and AES-GCM, ensuring that all chats remain private and secure—even in a fully decentralized network. Users can create password-protected chat channels, throttle message speed, and even enable “panic mode,” which erases data immediately in sensitive situations.
Currently, Bitchat is only available to iPhone users via TestFlight, Apple’s beta testing platform. The initial 10,000 beta slots were filled within 24 hours of launch. Here’s how to install it if slots reopen:
If the beta is full, users can follow Jack Dorsey on X or check the official GitHub repository for future release updates. An Android version is reportedly in the works.
In an age where digital surveillance, internet shutdowns, and censorship are becoming increasingly common, Bitchat offers a promising alternative for secure and resilient communication. It could be particularly impactful in regions with limited infrastructure or during large-scale protests, natural disasters, or war zones.
Although Bitchat’s core features are promising, cybersecurity experts have raised early concerns. The app has not yet undergone formal third-party audits. According to TechCrunch, researchers were able to spoof user identities in an early test build. Dorsey has since acknowledged the need for “open community auditing” before a full-scale launch.
Future updates are expected to include:
Bitchat represents a bold step toward democratizing communication in an age of growing surveillance and instability. While it is still in its infancy, and security concerns remain, the app’s potential to reshape how we communicate during crises or in censored environments is enormous.
Whether it evolves into the next privacy-first messenger or inspires a wave of similar projects, one thing is clear: Jack Dorsey is not done disrupting how the world connects.
