In a sharp response to the escalating trade rift between the United States and Japan, Nintendo Co., Ltd. has postponed the U.S. pre-orders of its highly anticipated Switch 2 console. The move comes after the U.S. announced a fresh round of tariffs on Japanese electronics, which includes gaming hardware and components.
Originally slated for a late April rollout, the Switch 2’s U.S. distribution now faces indefinite delays. Nintendo has cited increased cost pressures on parts sourcing, logistics, and component assembly as direct consequences of the tariffs imposed under the new trade policy initiated by President Donald Trump's administration.
Japanese officials, including Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, have criticized the tariff hikes as "economically destabilizing." In a press statement, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) called the decision "a threat to the bilateral tech economy" and urged diplomatic discussions to prevent long-term industry disruption.
Retailers in the U.S. have already begun adjusting pre-order estimates and stock allocations, with several major chains marking the release date as “TBD.” Gamers are voicing frustration online, with hashtags like #Switch2Delay trending in both North America and Japan. Nintendo has not provided a revised release schedule but confirmed that non-U.S. markets will continue as planned.
This delay highlights the growing strain on Japanese electronics firms that rely on the U.S. as a major consumer market. Analysts warn that extended trade hostilities could damage Japan's reputation as a stable export economy and set a troubling precedent for future product launches from Sony, Panasonic, and Fujitsu.
With U.S.-Japan trade talks yet to resume, the gaming industry remains caught in economic crossfire. Nintendo, known for weathering past global disruptions, may need to explore alternate supply chains or consider shifting production to avoid long-term fallout. For now, the Switch 2 delay stands as one of the first high-profile tech casualties of the 2025 tariff wave.
