Gamers across the world may soon have to pay more for their favorite gaming consoles as the latest U.S.-China trade tensions are expected to lead to price hikes on popular devices like the Nintendo Switch 2 and Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5).
Following U.S. President Donald Trump's recent announcement of a 145% tariff on select Chinese imports, the gaming industry is now bracing for higher manufacturing costs. Since many gaming consoles, including Nintendo Switch and PlayStation components, are manufactured in China, the increased import duties are expected to push retail prices higher.
Industry experts believe that the Nintendo Switch 2, expected to launch later in 2025, could see a price increase of $50 to $100 depending on the region. Similarly, the Sony PS5, which is already facing supply constraints, might also see new price adjustments.
Neither Sony nor Nintendo has officially announced a price increase yet. However, analysts expect price revisions to be made public closer to the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 and the holiday season 2025 for the PS5.
Gamers are advised to expect limited discounts and higher pricing for new models in the coming months. Retailers may also adjust prices based on inventory availability and demand during the holiday season.
With trade tensions heating up, gaming console prices are set to face upward pressure. Fans eagerly waiting for the Nintendo Switch 2 or planning to buy the Sony PS5 should keep a close eye on official announcements and plan their purchases accordingly.
