Australian gamers received unexpected news today as Sony Interactive Entertainment announced an immediate increase in the retail price of its flagship gaming console — the PlayStation 5. The decision, which Sony attributes to ongoing economic pressures, marks the first price revision in Australia since the console’s 2020 launch.
While Sony did not specify a percentage, retailers across the country have already adjusted their listings. On average, the price for the standard disc edition has increased by approximately AUD $50, with the digital edition seeing a slightly smaller hike.
Retailers including JB Hi-Fi, EB Games, and Amazon Australia have confirmed the updated pricing as of April 14, 2025.
According to Sony’s statement, the adjustment is in response to a combination of rising logistics costs, foreign exchange fluctuations, and broader global inflation affecting manufacturing and supply chains.
“We remain committed to delivering the best gaming experience, but these economic conditions require a price revision in select markets,” Sony said in a statement.
The announcement sparked immediate debate across online forums and social media platforms. Some consumers expressed frustration over the timing, especially as new PS5 bundles and exclusive titles are launching in Q2 2025. Others noted that Sony had maintained stable pricing for years and attributed the increase to market realities.
Retailers are bracing for potential slowdowns in sales, particularly among first-time buyers and holiday shoppers. Analysts suggest that the price bump may push some consumers to opt for refurbished models or consider Xbox Series X/S consoles as alternatives.
Sony has not indicated if further price increases are planned, but experts believe the company will closely monitor market response and consumer demand. Meanwhile, ongoing chip shortages and global inflation may continue to influence gaming hardware pricing through 2025.
