As of June 1, 2025, WhatsApp has officially ended support for a range of older smartphones, affecting both iPhone and Android users. This move, part of the platform’s ongoing efforts to optimize performance and security, means millions of legacy devices can no longer access the world’s most popular messaging app.
Among the discontinued models are the Apple iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. On the Android side, WhatsApp has ceased functionality on early-generation smartphones running outdated operating systems such as Android 5.0 Lollipop or earlier.
Users with affected devices will no longer be able to send or receive messages, access media files, or make calls through WhatsApp. The company has recommended that users upgrade to newer devices running at least iOS 12 or Android 6.0 to continue using the app without interruption.
Those unable to upgrade immediately are urged to back up their chat history via Google Drive or iCloud to prevent permanent data loss.
Each year, WhatsApp reviews which devices and software versions are outdated or no longer meet performance and security benchmarks. With the messaging app introducing more advanced features, including AI-powered chat assistance and enhanced encryption, legacy systems can no longer handle the technical requirements.
This strategic decision is aligned with the broader tech industry trend of sunsetting older software to focus on innovation and platform efficiency.

As always, keeping your apps and devices up-to-date is key to maintaining security and performance in a fast-evolving digital world.
