Denmark has officially summoned the U.S. ambassador following explosive reports alleging that American intelligence services have engaged in surveillance operations in Greenland. The move comes after a Wall Street Journal article claimed the U.S. has ramped up efforts to monitor Greenlandic and Danish political figures, stirring fresh tensions between two long-standing NATO allies.
According to the report, U.S. intelligence agencies have been tasked with identifying individuals in Greenland and Denmark who support Washington’s strategic interests—particularly in relation to Greenland’s increasing autonomy, its rich natural resources, and its geopolitical importance in the Arctic region.
Foreign Minister Demands Answers
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen addressed the issue directly, saying, “We do not spy on friends.” He confirmed that the U.S. ambassador has been summoned for discussions to clarify the scope and intent of the alleged surveillance. Rasmussen expressed deep concern about the reports, calling them “troubling” and “inconsistent with friendly diplomatic relations.”
“Denmark takes these allegations seriously. We expect transparency and respect between allies,” he added.
Greenland’s Growing Strategic Value
Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has long attracted U.S. attention due to its strategic location in the Arctic and vast reserves of untapped natural resources. Former U.S. President Donald Trump even suggested purchasing Greenland in 2019—a proposal that was swiftly rejected by Denmark and widely criticized as tone-deaf.

More recently, the U.S. has increased its diplomatic and military presence in Greenland, including the reopening of a consulate in Nuuk. However, the reported spying activity has reignited debates in both Denmark and Greenland about foreign influence and sovereignty.
Local and Global Repercussions
- Greenlandic officials have voiced concern, with some calling for a reassessment of U.S. diplomatic operations in the region.
- The Danish Security and Intelligence Service has warned of increasing espionage threats targeting Arctic and defense interests.
- Analysts suggest the incident could further complicate U.S.-EU relations amid broader geopolitical tensions in the Arctic.
The timing is especially sensitive, as Arctic nations continue to assert territorial and economic interests in the region. Climate change is rapidly transforming the Arctic landscape, making it more accessible—and more contested—than ever before.
What Comes Next?
While the U.S. has not officially responded to the latest allegations, diplomatic talks are expected to begin in the coming days. Denmark has made it clear that respect for its sovereignty, especially regarding Greenland, is non-negotiable.
As Rasmussen put it, “Our friendship with the U.S. must be built on trust and mutual respect. That includes respecting the privacy and integrity of our political processes.”
