In a major advancement for clean energy, Finland has launched its first industrial-scale eMethane production facility in Harjavalta. The plant, operated by renewable energy company Q Power, uses green hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide to produce synthetic methane — a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels.
A Milestone for the Hydrogen Economy
This pioneering initiative places Finland at the forefront of Europe’s green hydrogen movement. The technology behind the Harjavalta facility is based on methanation, a process that combines renewable hydrogen with CO₂ to create eMethane, which can be used as a drop-in replacement for natural gas.

- Plant capacity: Several megawatts of renewable gas output.
- Raw materials: Green hydrogen and recycled carbon dioxide.
- Applications: District heating, heavy industry, and transportation fuel.
Environmental and Economic Impact
Unlike fossil-derived natural gas, eMethane can be produced with minimal net emissions, making it a valuable asset in Finland’s carbon neutrality roadmap. The facility is expected to reduce industrial carbon footprints and strengthen energy independence.
Q Power’s Vision
Q Power’s CEO described the launch as “a blueprint for future energy infrastructure” and expressed hopes to replicate the model across Nordic and European markets. Finland’s government has voiced support for expanding the country’s hydrogen capabilities as part of its Green Transition initiative.
