India Responds with Seven Major Actions Against Pakistan Following Deadly Pahalgam Terror Attack

In a swift and decisive response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 people in Jammu and Kashmir, India has implemented a series of stringent measures against Pakistan over the last two days. The attack, which has drawn national outrage, prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to vow that every terrorist and their backers would be “identified, tracked, and punished.”
During an emergency meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by PM Modi, India outlined a comprehensive plan involving diplomatic, strategic, and humanitarian actions aimed at isolating Pakistan and sending a clear message of zero tolerance toward terrorism.
Here Are the 7 Major Actions Taken by India
1. Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty
India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a historic agreement brokered by the World Bank in 1960, which governs water sharing between India and Pakistan. Officials stated that the suspension will remain until Pakistan credibly and irreversibly halts support for cross-border terrorism. The treaty is critical for both nations, especially for water-dependent agricultural sectors.
2. Expulsion of Pakistani Military Attaches
In a strong diplomatic move, India has ordered the expulsion of three Pakistani military attaches and instructed Islamabad to reduce its diplomatic staff strength at its High Commission in New Delhi from 55 to 30 personnel.
3. Termination of SAARC Visa Exemptions
India will no longer permit Pakistani nationals to travel under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES). Those already in India under SVES visas have been given 48 hours to leave the country, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
4. Closure of the Attari Integrated Check Post
The CCS has ordered the immediate closure of the Attari Integrated Check Post—the only operational land crossing between India and Pakistan. Those who entered India with valid documents may return through this post before May 1.

5. Persona Non Grata Status for Defence Advisors
India has declared Pakistan’s defence, naval, and air advisors persona non grata. They have one week to leave the country. Simultaneously, India will withdraw its own military advisors from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.
6. Visa Suspension and Revocation
The Ministry of External Affairs has suspended all visa services for Pakistani nationals effective immediately. All valid Indian visas issued to Pakistani citizens will be revoked starting April 27. Only medical visas will be honored until April 29, after which all Pakistani nationals are expected to exit India before their visas expire.
7. Scaling Down of Border Retreat Ceremonies
The Border Security Force (BSF) has scaled down the ceremonial flag-lowering retreat events at the Attari-Wagah, Hussainiwala, and Sadki borders. These events, a long-standing tradition since 1959, are popular with tourists but have been curtailed in light of recent tensions.
National Grief and Resolve
As the nation mourns the victims of the Pahalgam attack, candlelight vigils and tributes have been held across the country. In Ahmedabad, members of the CG Road Shop Owners’ Association and local residents came together to pay homage to the deceased.
With these seven sweeping actions, the Indian government has made clear its commitment to pursuing justice—not just for the victims of Pahalgam, but as a deterrent to any future attempts at destabilization through terror.
