In a developing security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, an Indian Army soldier was killed during an ongoing encounter with terrorists in the Dudu-Basantgarh area of Udhampur district on April 24, 2025. The operation was launched following intelligence inputs about the presence of armed militants in the hilly region near the Chenab Valley corridor.
Operation Initiated on Specific Intelligence
According to official sources, the operation began late Wednesday night after surveillance teams detected suspicious movement in the dense forests surrounding Basantgarh. A search-and-cordon mission was initiated, which quickly escalated into a gunfight as terrorists opened fire on security forces.
- One Indian Army soldier sustained critical injuries in the exchange and later succumbed.
- The identity of the fallen soldier is being withheld until next of kin are notified.
- Additional reinforcements have been deployed to the area to prevent any escape routes for the terrorists.
Second High-Alert Incident This Week
This encounter follows a deadly militant attack in Pahalgam just two days earlier, which left 26 civilians dead. Security forces across Jammu and Kashmir have since been placed on high alert, particularly in border districts and vulnerable mountain corridors.
In the wake of the encounter, roadblocks have been set up and drones are being used to monitor movement in nearby villages. The Dudu-Basantgarh region, known for its rugged terrain and limited civilian infrastructure, poses significant challenges for counter-insurgency operations.
