Human Rights Watch Slams Trump’s First 100 Days as “Assault on Rights”

April 24, 2025 — Human Rights Watch (HRW) has issued a damning assessment of President Donald Trump's first 100 days in office, accusing the administration of carrying out what it describes as a “deliberate and sweeping assault” on human rights across the United States.
The report, released early Thursday morning, outlines a series of executive actions, policy shifts, and administrative decisions that HRW claims undermine fundamental rights related to immigration, education, environmental protection, and civil liberties.
Key Areas of Concern Highlighted by HRW
HRW’s findings highlight several major policy actions taken by the Trump administration since returning to the White House in January 2025. These include:
- Immigration Crackdowns: Mass arrests of undocumented immigrants, revocation of DACA protections, and the continued enforcement of strict asylum bans.
- Education Policy: Executive orders aimed at curbing diversity and inclusion programs in public schools and colleges, along with changes to federal funding for “non-compliant” institutions.
- Environmental Deregulation: Rollbacks of major EPA safeguards and the reauthorization of oil drilling in protected wildlife areas and coastal zones.
- Protest Suppression: Local law enforcement agencies have allegedly increased the use of excessive force against peaceful demonstrators under expanded federal policing directives.
“Erosion of Democratic Norms”
“The Trump administration is dismantling protections with remarkable speed, while showing disregard for transparency, equity, and basic freedoms,” said Kenneth Roth, Senior Policy Advisor at Human Rights Watch. “The pace and scale of these reversals raise serious alarms about the erosion of democratic norms.”
HRW also warned of the administration’s tendency to bypass legislative processes through executive orders and emergency powers, limiting public oversight and accountability.

White House Responds
In response, the White House dismissed the HRW report as “baseless” and “politically motivated.” A spokesperson stated, “President Trump is restoring balance to a nation overrun by bureaucratic overreach. These reforms are necessary to protect American sovereignty, education standards, and economic resilience.”
Calls for Congressional Oversight
Following the report’s release, several Democratic lawmakers called for renewed congressional scrutiny into the administration’s use of executive authority. Hearings are reportedly being planned to assess the legal and humanitarian implications of the early-term policies.
What Happens Next?
The Human Rights Watch report adds to a growing wave of criticism from domestic and international watchdogs. With nearly four years remaining in the Trump presidency, advocacy groups are bracing for further confrontations over civil rights, immigration policy, and federal authority.
