Japan Drafts Civilian Evacuation Plan for Remote Okinawa Islands
In response to rising tensions near Taiwan, the Japanese government has prepared an evacuation plan for over 120,000 residents from the Sakishima Islands, part of Okinawa Prefecture. These islands lie close to Taiwan and are considered vulnerable in the event of military escalation in the region.
According to officials, the plan involves air and sea transport to relocate residents and tourists within six days. Evacuation drills will begin in April 2026. The Japanese Self-Defense Forces will be involved in coordination with local authorities.
This move reflects growing concerns over China's military pressure on Taiwan and the evolving regional security dynamics.
