Russia’s Stavropol Hit by Severe Hailstorm, Damaging Major Wheat Crops
Date: 09-apr-2025

Russia’s agricultural sector suffered a major blow this week as a severe hailstorm tore through the Stavropol region—the country’s third-largest wheat-producing area. Officials report that thousands of hectares of crops have been destroyed, compounding worries about the nation’s 2025 grain output.
The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed that the storm hit without warning on April 8, leaving behind shredded fields, damaged silos, and flooded farmland. Local farmers say they are already bracing for reduced yields following an unusually dry winter.
“This is the worst early-season hailstorm we’ve seen in years,” said Anatoly Kozlov, a wheat farmer in southern Stavropol. “We’ve lost over 60% of our crop in a single day.”

Climate experts are warning of more erratic weather patterns affecting food security across Eastern Europe. Combined with existing export challenges due to ongoing sanctions and logistic disruptions, Russia’s position as a global grain supplier could be under pressure.
Government aid programs are expected to be announced soon, though some farmers argue it may be too late to recover this year’s harvest.
