Former U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly condemned the latest wave of Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv, which killed at least 12 civilians and injured nearly 90 others earlier this week. In a statement posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump called the strikes “unnecessary” and warned Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the escalation.
Direct Appeal to Putin
The post marks one of Trump’s most direct rebukes of Putin since the war in Ukraine began. While he has previously praised Putin’s leadership style and criticized U.S. aid to Ukraine, Trump’s comments now reflect concern over the human cost and escalating violence.
The missile strikes targeted residential buildings and infrastructure in Kyiv, reigniting fears of renewed large-scale urban warfare in Ukraine’s capital. Rescue operations are ongoing as officials assess the full scale of the damage.
Calls for a Peace Agreement
Trump emphasized the urgency of reaching a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, citing high casualties and the toll on both Russian and Ukrainian forces. He claimed that Russia is ready for peace but questioned whether Ukraine was willing to come to the negotiating table.
“Let’s get the Peace Deal DONE,” Trump wrote, without providing specific terms or frameworks. This aligns with his long-held claim that the war could be ended “in 24 hours” if he were re-elected president in 2024.

Zelenskyy Firm on Sovereignty
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reiterated that any peace agreement must respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity, including the return of occupied regions such as Crimea and Donbas. The Ukrainian government has rejected suggestions of territorial concessions, which remain a key sticking point in stalled negotiations.
Global Response and Political Context
Trump’s statement comes amid renewed international attention on the conflict, as world leaders urge restraint and diplomacy. The timing of Trump’s post may also reflect strategic positioning as he campaigns for a return to the White House in the 2024 U.S. election, seeking to present himself as a peacemaker capable of ending the war swiftly.
While Trump’s comments drew praise from his supporters for encouraging dialogue, critics noted the lack of specific policy details and the controversial implication that Ukraine may need to compromise on its sovereignty.
As the war grinds into its third year, the prospect of peace remains elusive—despite growing pressure from international actors and rising costs on both sides of the conflict.
