Trump Claims India to Cut Tariffs 'Very Substantially' Ahead of April 2 ‘Liberation Day’ Announcement
Date: 01-apr-2025

US President Donald Trump has claimed that India is planning to reduce tariffs on American goods “very substantially”, just a day before he’s set to announce sweeping new trade measures at what he has dubbed “Liberation Day” on April 2.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Trump stated, “I think I heard that India just a little while ago is going to be dropping its tariffs very substantially, and I said why didn't somebody do this a long time ago.” The comments come as trade officials in Washington prepare to unveil a set of reciprocal tariffs aimed at addressing what the administration sees as unfair practices by multiple foreign trading partners.
Trump's remarks are part of a larger effort to reshape the global trade landscape in favor of American exporters, especially in key sectors like agriculture and manufacturing.
White House Slams India’s 100% Tariffs on US Farm Goods
In the same briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt cited India’s 100% tariff on American agricultural products as an example of “unfair” trade practices. “It’s virtually impossible for US products to reach certain foreign markets, including India,” she said.
“These countries have been ripping off our nation for far too long,” Leavitt continued. “It’s time for reciprocity.” She confirmed that President Trump will introduce a historic tariff plan during a Rose Garden press conference on Wednesday, attended by his full cabinet.

The upcoming tariff announcement has already rattled global markets and foreign capitals. Alongside India, the White House also named Japan, the European Union, and Canada as nations imposing high barriers on US goods.
According to Trump’s team, April 2 will mark a shift in American trade policy, with the president taking bold steps to protect American jobs and industries. “Wednesday, it will be Liberation Day in America,” Leavitt said. “The President will roll back decades of unfair trade practices. He's doing this in the best interest of the American worker.”
While specifics of the tariff policy remain under wraps, Trump’s comments suggest India may be reevaluating its position under growing international pressure.
