WhatsApp, Maps & Instagram Used in ₹200 Crore Tax Evasion Case
On March 26, 2025, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told Parliament that digital platforms such as WhatsApp, Google Maps, and Instagram played a crucial role in helping tax authorities uncover over ₹200 crore in unaccounted crypto-linked income. Her remarks came as part of her defense of the Income Tax Bill, 2025, which introduces expanded powers for tax surveillance and digital investigations.
New Technology, New Tools for Enforcement
Addressing the Lok Sabha, Sitharaman emphasized the role of encrypted WhatsApp messages in detecting crypto assets and benami transactions. She said, “Encrypted mobile chats led to evidence of ₹250 crore unaccounted wealth; ₹200 crore of it came from WhatsApp crypto communication alone.” The minister added that Google Maps history had been used to track suspected cash hideouts, while Instagram accounts had helped trace property linked to fake owners.
Digital Access Now Central to Tax Investigations
The minister said the new Income Tax Bill enables tax officials to access communication apps, emails, cloud-based business software, and servers during investigations. This shift, she argued, is essential for bringing virtual assets like cryptocurrencies, digital tokens, and online investments under the tax net.
