The football world is mourning the sudden and tragic loss of former Croatian international Nikola Pokrivač, who passed away in a fatal car crash on April 18, 2025, at the age of 39.
The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) confirmed the news, stating that the accident occurred in a multi-vehicle collision near the town of Karlovac. Pokrivač was reportedly traveling with two teammates from NK Vojnić '95 — both of whom sustained critical injuries. Another individual in a separate vehicle also died at the scene.
Nikola Pokrivač earned 15 caps for Croatia between 2008 and 2010 and was part of the squad during UEFA Euro 2008. A technically gifted midfielder known for his composure and versatility, he played alongside greats like Luka Modrić and Darijo Srna.

He retired from top-flight football in the mid-2010s after a decade of competitive play, but continued to feature in lower divisions, most recently for NK Vojnić '95, showing his undying passion for the game.
In 2015, Pokrivač was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, a form of cancer. His battle with the illness was widely followed in Croatia, where fans praised his courage and positive outlook. He underwent multiple rounds of treatment, at one point saying, “I don’t fear death, I fear not living fully.”
He eventually overcame the illness and became an inspirational figure, especially among young athletes and cancer survivors in the region. His comeback to amateur football even after his diagnosis made him a symbol of resilience.
The Croatian Football Federation released a heartfelt statement: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Nikola Pokrivač — a true warrior on and off the field. His contribution to Croatian football and his spirit in the face of adversity will never be forgotten.”
Clubs he once played for, including Dinamo Zagreb and Red Bull Salzburg, also expressed condolences. Tributes from former teammates and fans continue to flood social media, honoring his sportsmanship, humility, and strength.
Nikola Pokrivač was more than a footballer — he was a fighter, a role model, and a beloved son of Croatia. From his battles on the pitch to his fight against cancer, he embodied courage in every sense. He may be gone too soon, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of football fans across Europe.
Rest in peace, Nikola. 💙⚽
