Sudhir Mishra Reacts to Netflix’s Adolescence Topping Charts in India: “Violates Every Rule of Bad Script Writing”

Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra, known for acclaimed works like Dharavi and Serious Men, has publicly questioned the top ranking of Netflix’s latest British drama *Adolescence* on the streaming platform’s India charts. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mishra shared that while he ended up admiring the show, its popularity among Indian viewers left him surprised.

How come Adolescence is the No 1 show on Netflix India. All conventional wisdom is against it. Indians are not supposed to like slow burners. It violates every rule taught by bad script writing schools,” he wrote. “It spirals down instead of soaring up. It’s the best news in years.”

Inspired by Fellow Filmmakers

Mishra admitted that he watched the show after seeing rave reviews from fellow directors Hansal Mehta and Shekhar Kapur. Responding to a social media user who attributed the show's reception to Western hype, Mishra clarified, “No, we didn’t [watch it because of hype]. I saw it because @mehtahansal and @shekharkapur were raving about it.”

He further added, “In fact, it’s one of those rare shows which was loved simultaneously across the Netflix universe. By the way, I liked *Better Call Saul* even more.”

What is *Adolescence* About?

*Adolescence* is a four-part British limited series directed by Philip Barantini, co-created by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne. Released on March 13, 2025, the show stars Stephen Graham and newcomer Owen Cooper. It tells the story of a family in crisis after 13-year-old Jamie Miller is arrested for the murder of a schoolmate.

The series explores deep societal issues including casual misogyny and the influence of social media on Gen Z. Each scene in the show is shot in a single take, a directorial approach that’s drawn praise for its intensity and realism.

Critical and Political Support

The show has not only earned critical acclaim but also political attention. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has backed Netflix’s initiative to stream the drama in UK secondary schools to engage students in conversation about modern adolescence and online culture.
