Japan Criticizes U.S. Tariff Move on Auto Imports
On March 27, 2025, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated that Japan is evaluating “all options” in response to the U.S. decision to implement a 25% tariff on imported vehicles. The tariff, set to begin April 3, is expected to heavily affect Japan’s auto exports, which account for over 28% of its U.S. trade volume.
Analysts project a potential 0.2% GDP decline if the tariff persists, with shares of major automakers like Toyota and Honda dipping following the announcement. Ishiba warned that this move could damage bilateral trade relations and global supply chains.
The Japanese government is expected to hold emergency meetings with industry leaders in the coming days to assess mitigation strategies.
