April 24, 2025 — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially condemned the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including women and children. In a statement shared on social media, Carney said he was “horrified by the senseless and shocking act of violence.”
“Canada strongly condemns this terrorist attack,” Carney posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Backlash Over Delayed Response
While the Prime Minister’s words aligned with widespread international condemnation of the attack, the timing of his statement sparked criticism. Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre issued his condemnation hours earlier, prompting questions about Carney’s perceived delay.
Canadian media outlets and social media users accused the Prime Minister of a “deafening silence” in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy. Some critics argued that a prompt response would have reflected stronger solidarity with India, a key democratic partner.
“It’s not just about diplomacy,” one columnist wrote. “It’s about moral leadership in the face of terror.”

Global Support for India
Carney’s condemnation joins a chorus of statements from world leaders. Officials from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, France, and Japan have all spoken out against the Pahalgam attack, calling for global cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
The attack, believed to have been carried out by Pakistan-backed militants, has reignited tensions in the region. India has responded by suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and ramping up border security.
Canada–India Ties Under Spotlight
This incident also brings renewed focus to the sometimes fragile relationship between Canada and India. Previous tensions over separatist rhetoric and diplomatic disputes had already strained ties, and many are watching closely to see how Carney’s administration navigates this sensitive moment.
Despite the backlash, Canada’s formal stance remains one of support: “Terrorism anywhere is a threat to peace everywhere,” Carney concluded in his message.
