Russia Moves to Delist Taliban as Terrorist Organization
Date: 01-apr-2025

the Prosecutor General of Russia filed a request with the Supreme Court to officially delist the Taliban from the country’s registry of terrorist organizations. This request follows a diplomatic shift in Russia’s stance, with President Vladimir Putin recently calling the Taliban a “trusted ally.”
The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for April 17 to review the matter. If approved, the Taliban’s removal would allow Russian entities to legally engage with Taliban-led Afghanistan, which remains under U.N. sanctions but is recognized by a growing number of regional powers.
While the Taliban remains listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and many Western countries, Russia has maintained contact with the group since it regained control of Kabul in 2021. Analysts view the move as part of Russia’s broader efforts to expand influence in Central Asia and counter U.S. presence in the region.
The decision has sparked debate both domestically and internationally regarding the legal and geopolitical implications of normalizing relations with the Taliban.
