Huawei is reportedly preparing to begin mass shipments of its new Ascend 910C AI chip to Chinese customers as early as next month, marking a major step forward for China’s domestic semiconductor ambitions. The move comes as U.S. export curbs tighten access to high-end chips from companies like Nvidia, forcing Chinese firms to look inward for AI hardware solutions.
The 910C chip is Huawei’s most powerful artificial intelligence processor to date. It combines two 910B units and delivers processing performance that the company claims is comparable to Nvidia’s high-performance H100 GPUs — chips that are now subject to stringent U.S. export controls.
As Nvidia’s H20 chips face increasing limitations under the Biden administration’s updated trade rules, Huawei’s 910C is emerging as a vital domestic solution for Chinese tech firms involved in AI training, natural language processing, and computer vision. This development could offer a lifeline to companies relying on cutting-edge AI capabilities but unable to access U.S.-made hardware.
The mass production of the 910C marks a significant milestone in China's broader strategy to reduce dependency on foreign technology, particularly in the semiconductor space. Huawei has positioned itself as a key player in that effort, despite facing its own set of U.S. sanctions since 2019.
“Chinese firms need an alternative to Nvidia — and the 910C could be it,” said a Beijing-based analyst. “The performance gap is narrowing, and Huawei is investing heavily in its chip architecture to support AI applications ranging from autonomous driving to generative models.”
Industry observers suggest that Huawei’s move could reshape the AI hardware landscape within China, especially as local AI firms like Baidu, iFlytek, and SenseTime accelerate their deployment of domestic infrastructure. With performance and availability being two key barriers, the 910C’s mass availability is expected to generate considerable interest.
However, it remains to be seen how the 910C will perform in large-scale, enterprise-grade AI training compared to Nvidia’s highly optimized software-hardware ecosystem. Still, Huawei’s advancements underscore China’s determination to develop an autonomous AI supply chain.
