April 24, 2025 – Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is taking a step back from his high-profile involvement with Washington’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a federal initiative launched under President Donald Trump’s administration. Although Musk is reducing his physical presence in D.C., his influence on the controversial project remains firmly intact.
According to multiple reports, Musk will scale down his engagement with DOGE starting in May, committing to just one or two days per week. The decision comes as Tesla grapples with a sharp 71% year-over-year drop in earnings, requiring more of Musk’s attention at the helm of the electric vehicle giant.
“My commitment to efficient government hasn’t changed,” Musk said during a recent briefing. “But right now, Tesla needs my focus.”
Since its inception, the DOGE initiative has attracted both praise and criticism for its aggressive efforts to slash government spending and cut what Musk frequently labeled “bureaucratic bloat.” Under his direction, the program has been linked to over 216,000 federal job cuts and major budget reductions in departments like the IRS and Health and Human Services.
Critics have raised concerns over transparency, with several lawsuits filed questioning the legality and oversight of DOGE’s actions. Still, Musk remains determined to support the program until the end of Trump’s term, even if from a distance.
One of DOGE’s more debated proposals is the so-called “gold card” immigration plan, which would offer wealthy foreign nationals a fast-track path to U.S. residency in exchange for a $5 million investment. The plan reportedly uses software developed by Musk’s teams, further highlighting his imprint on federal operations.
“Whether he’s in Washington or not, Musk’s influence on government reform is now institutional,” said a White House official familiar with the matter. “DOGE is moving forward with or without his direct oversight.”
With Musk stepping back, the future direction of DOGE remains uncertain. While some insiders suggest the initiative may lose momentum, others argue that the foundation laid by Musk ensures its continuation — for better or worse.
As the 2024 election cycle heats up and government accountability takes center stage, Musk’s partial exit signals not an end, but a new chapter in his controversial role in U.S. governance.
