Artificial Intelligence may hold the key to curing all diseases within the next decade, according to Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google DeepMind. In a recent interview aired on CBS’s 60 Minutes, Hassabis shared his belief that the rapid advancement of AI could radically transform healthcare and drug development worldwide.
“We could cure all diseases within our lifetime—and perhaps even within a decade,” said Hassabis, citing breakthrough innovations such as DeepMind’s AlphaFold, which has already predicted over 200 million protein structures. This tool alone has dramatically accelerated biomedical research by providing insights that would have taken humans centuries to uncover.
Hassabis highlighted how AI can shrink the drug discovery timeline from years to mere weeks. With faster, more precise data analysis and simulation, researchers are now able to target disease mechanisms and test new therapies more efficiently than ever before.
Backing Hassabis’s bold vision is Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI. Srinivas praised Hassabis in a recent post, calling him a “genius” and affirming his support by saying, “Give him all the compute and data he needs.”
Srinivas’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among tech leaders that AI can—and should—be fully harnessed to solve humanity’s greatest health challenges.
Hassabis believes we are currently riding an “exponential curve” of AI development. From protein folding to personalized medicine, the implications are massive. But he also emphasized the need for careful oversight to ensure ethical implementation of AI in healthcare.
“We have the tools, the data, and the intelligence. Now it's about scaling it responsibly,” he said during the interview.
