In a significant move to enhance youth safety on social media, Meta has announced that it will begin using artificial intelligence to detect teenage users on Instagram who may have misrepresented their age—and automatically enroll them into stricter account settings. The update was revealed on April 21, 2025, and marks a major expansion in Meta’s use of AI for content moderation and age verification.
The AI system analyzes user behavior, profile information, and in-app activity to estimate a user's likely age. If an account appears to be operated by someone under 18—even if they’ve signed up as older—Instagram will proactively apply what it calls “Teen Account” settings.
The automatically applied teen-focused protections include:
The decision follows growing scrutiny from regulators, lawmakers, and parents over the safety of children and teens on platforms like Instagram and Facebook. Meta’s update is part of a larger strategy to balance platform engagement with user wellbeing, particularly for its younger audience.
“We want teens to enjoy Instagram in a safer, more age-appropriate way—even if they don’t always register their real age,” said a spokesperson for Meta. “AI helps us bridge that gap.”
Meta also announced a new awareness campaign aimed at educating parents on digital safety and encouraging conversations about age-appropriate social media use. Users who believe they’ve been incorrectly flagged as underage will have the option to reverse the changes by verifying their identity and age.
Industry experts are calling this a positive but long-overdue step toward responsible content curation and youth protection in the tech space.
